Land Trust Member Profile: Inland Northwest Land Conservancy

Mission & key programs

Inland Northwest Land Conservancy’s mission is to conserve, care for, and connect with lands and waters essential to life in the Inland Northwest. Our team works with our community to identify and protect special places throughout the region.

In our key programs, we protect private lands through legal agreements with landowners. We also work to improve lands under our management for habitat, clean water and air, and native plants. Our team engages with the community in ways that foster a love of nature through hikes and other experiences outdoors, and through programs and partnerships that highlight the beautiful lands and waters in our region. In recent years, the Conservancy has partnered with other agencies and community organizations to protect land for public enjoyment.

Service Area

We serve the Inland Northwest, covering eastern Washington and northern Idaho. This includes key natural areas such as the Spokane River watershed, Lakes Pend Oreille and Coeur d’Alene, the Selkirk mountain range, and the Palouse prairie. Our work focuses on connecting protected lands to create a resilient landscape for plants, wildlife, and humans.

unique in the central rocky Mountains

Our region sits at the confluence of multiple ecosystems—where the Rocky Mountains meet the Columbia Plateau. This creates a critical transition zone for wildlife movement and habitat resilience. Our work also intersects with vital waterway restoration efforts, including salmon reintroduction in the Spokane River system. With a rapidly growing population, protecting natural spaces in eastern Washington and northern Idaho is essential to balancing conservation of nature with the needs of our human community.

project highlight

One of our most significant recent successes, aided by funding from Heart of the Rockies Initiative’s Keep It Connected program, is the Glen Tana Conservation Project along the Little Spokane River. This 1,060-acre project will protect crucial wildlife habitat, restore prime salmon spawning areas, and expand public recreation opportunities. Glen Tana exemplifies our mission by blending conservation, restoration, and community access to nature.
